We had such a great experience with Safari Masters. We self-drove through the Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorogoro, Serengeti, and up to the Mara River to see the Great Migration. The car was powerful, very reliable and well-stocked. We also had great support from Felix who helped us work out where we should stay on our journey

Things to Consider while Planning your RoadTrip Kenya

Before booking your Kenya self-drive safari 4×4 rental, plan your trip by considering the following things:

Check the weather forecast before starting your journey. If you plan to visit between June and October, these months are best for rain-free days to witness wildlife events and enjoy outdoor activities. March to May are the rainy months, so ensure you pack enough gear like raincoats, umbrellas, and waterproof boots. June and August are cooler months, so pack enough warm clothing.

You don’t need to apply for a visa to enter Kenya, as an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) is sufficient. You can apply online by providing your passport and other details on the official site. Also, arrange a return or onward ticket from Kenya and proof of funds to ensure your travel eligibility.

For advance bookings or any purchases, US dollars are widely accepted. However, we suggest keeping some cash in the local currency, the Kenyan Shilling, to have smooth transactions with local vendors.

Consider the top destinations, including the world’s leading wildlife parks and other coastal beauties such as Diani, Malindi, and Mombasa beaches, for exciting water sports. For hikers, Mount Longonot, Ngong Hills, Mount Elgon, and Mount Kenya are highly recommended.

With a 4×4 self-drive Kenya, explore the best safari circuits and camping spots between wilderness and urbanization at your own pace. With pre-booked accommodation, park entrance permits, and a drive guide, Safari Masters ensures your road trip remains smooth and full of memories.

Why Safari Masters for Kenya Self-Drive Safari

What do I need to rent a car for self-drive in Kenya?

You need a valid driving license, passport copy, and a refundable security deposit. We also require basic contact details and travel itinerary. If you’re under 23 or over 65, additional documentation might be needed. The process is straightforward and we guide you through every step.

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Kenya?

Yes, an International Driving Permit is mandatory for driving in Kenya alongside your original license. It’s easily obtainable from your home country before travel. This ensures you’re legally covered throughout your self-drive adventure across Kenya’s national parks and reserves.

Can anyone other than the applicant drive the rental car?

Additional drivers can be added to the rental agreement for a small fee. They must meet the same requirements as the primary driver – valid license, IDP, and age criteria. Just inform us during booking and we’ll arrange everything accordingly.

How far in advance can I reserve a rental car?

You can reserve your 4×4 vehicle as early as you want, though we recommend booking at least 2-3 months ahead, especially during peak season (July-October). Early booking ensures better vehicle availability and gives you more time to plan your perfect Kenya safari itinerary.

Can I drive across borders into other East African countries with the rental car?

Yes, cross-border travel to Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda is allowed with prior arrangement. Additional insurance and documentation are required, which we handle for you. Just inform us during booking about your border-crossing plans and we’ll sort out all necessary paperwork.
